Chenku Waterfalls : A hidden gem waiting to be tapped !
By Klenam.
Are you in search of a budget-friendly getaway close to nature, not far from Accra? Look no further! Chenku Waterfalls is the perfect destination to fulfill these needs. Tucked away in Dodowa in the Eastern Region of Ghana, this hidden gem is just a stone's throw away from Accra – so close, you might mistake it for an extension of the city itself.—an oasis waiting to be discovered.
To journey to Chenku, we embarked from the Madina lorry station on public transport to the Dodowa Market, which amounted to 15 cedis per person. Upon arrival, before venturing to the falls, indulging in the delicious coconut offerings sold by locals at the market is a must-do experience. Additionally, motorbikes stationed in front of the market can transport you to the falls' entrance for a fee of 10 cedis per person or 20 cedis for two riders.
Upon reaching the entrance, you'll be presented with two enticing options: hiking the mountain to the upper falls for 50 cedis per person or walking to the lower falls for 20 cedis per person. Personally, I highly recommend the invigorating hike to the upper falls, which then flows into the lower falls. The ascent typically takes about an hour and is a definite highlight of the visit.
During our uphill trek, we traversed the Chenku River, which meanders into a stream in Madina and eventually empties into the sea. The surrounding area is dotted with numerous farms cultivating maize, cocoa, pineapple, mango, and various other crops.
The upper falls offer a tranquil and mesmerizing ambiance with fewer visitors, where the soothing symphony of chirping birds and the cascading water creates a therapeutic environment. Meanwhile, while the lower falls are equally enchanting, the larger crowds may not appeal to those seeking peace and solitude.
Swimming in the falls is permitted, except for individuals menstruating, as it is considered taboo to swim in the river during this time. It's advisable to bring along your own provisions, as there are no vendors onsite. For the best experience, plan your visit to Chenku between the hours of 8 am and 11 am, especially if you intend to embark on a hike.
When departing, simply retrace your steps from the entrance, following the path through the farms until you reach Falls Street and the road leading back to the market, where you can easily secure transportation back to Accra.
